PLACEMENT TEST FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN

St. James Academy administers the HSPT (High School Placement Test) to determine the proper placement of incoming freshmen at St. James. Students are required to pre-register for the exam. Online registration is available beginning October 2, 2023.
We ask that all freshmen applying to take the placement test at St. James. All incoming freshmen are expected to take the placement test at the high school where they’re most likely to enroll. Students may qualify for awards based on test achievement.

Cost?
The cost of the test $20.
When?
December 2, 2023. Please contact ahellwig@sjathunder.org if there is a conflict with this date. Students should only take the HSPT once.
Where?
The HSPT will be administered in the academic classrooms of St. James Academy.
Testing time?
Students should arrive no later than 7:45 a.m. The test will last until approximately 12:00 p.m.
What to bring?
Please bring two sharpened #2 pencils, a small healthy snack and/or a bottled water. Students will not be allowed to use calculators on the Math portion of the test.
Accommodations?
Any student who requires accommodations for the HSPT must have a formal written plan listing accommodations/adjustments for standardized testing. Parents requesting accommodations for their child for the HSPT should submit their formal plan, Catholic School Student Support Plan in compliance with 504 laws for private schools (CSSSP), IEP or 504 for review at least two weeks prior to the HSPT. Any approved accommodations will be communicated to the parents prior to the test date.

PLACEMENT TEST AWARDS
Archbishop Award winners are recognized for scoring in the top percentile of the testers at St. James. They receive $1500 their freshman year and $1000 each year thereafter, so long as they’re students in good standing. This group is recommended for several, if not all, Pre-AP curriculum their freshman year.
President Award winners are recognized for being the second percentile of testers. They receive $1000 their freshman year, and $500 each year thereafter so long as they’re students in good standing. Most of these students will be recommended for Pre-AP courses their freshman year.
Principal Award winners are recognized for being in the third percentile of our testing group. They receive $500 their freshman year, and $250 each year thereafter so long as they’re students in good standing. They will likely be recommended for Pre-AP courses their freshman year.
Thunder Award winners are recognized for being in the fourth percentile of our testing group. They receive $250 their freshman year and will likely be recommended for Pre-AP courses their freshman year.
SPANISH AND LATIN PLACEMENT TEST
TEST DATES: APRIL 8 OR 9, 2024
An additional placement test is required for students wishing to be placed in Honors Spanish II or Honors Latin II. This test is different from the general placement test given in December and January.
Test will be given at St. James and students may attend either date. Registration is required.
SCHOLARSHIPS
St. James Academy offers several scholarships for incoming freshman, to reward their accomplishments in academics as well as in their faith life and community involvement.
